Soil contamination requiring clean up is present at approximately
250,000 sites in the EEA member countries, according to recent
estimates.
This number is expected to increase as national investigations
proceed.
In the last 30 years, the available data on remediation shows
that around 80,000 sites have been cleaned up. It will take
decades to solve the legacy of contamination.
How is the problem of contaminated sites being addressed
in Europe?
- Which sectors contribute most to the problem?
- Which are the main contaminants affecting soil and groundwater?
- How much is being spent on clean-up?
- How much progress is being achieved in management and
control of contaminated sites?
