Dry Ice Blasting - A new environmentally friendly cleaning process

Cork-based Alternative Maintenance Services Ltd. was set-up to satisfy a growing demand for an alternative, environmentally friendly and low cost cleaning solution in many industries.

Dry ice blasting and Media blasting are two methods Alternative Maintenance Services specialises in for cleaning a wide range of equipment in all industries.

Dry ice blasting is a new 'dry cleaning' method and is increasingly used worldwide for cleaning injection moulding equipment, medical device manufacturing equipment, printing equipment, power generating equipment, food and beverage equipment and fire restoration.

It is a process in which particles of solid carbon dioxide - commonly known as dry ice - are accelerated in a pressurised air stream to impact a surface to be cleaned. Upon impact, the dry ice pellet creates a micro-thermal shock which breaks the bond between the coating and the substrate. The thermal shock is caused by the extreme cold temperature of the dry ice, which is -79°C.

The high pressure air stream removes the contaminant from the surface, while the dry ice pellets vaporise upon contact with the surface.

Traditional abrasive blasting methods clean through a chiseling action, damaging the underlying surface. There are no harmfull chemicals or liquids used in the process.

Dry ice blasting has been approved by the FDA, EPA and USDA as an acceptable cleaning method.
