Hydrogeologist, Teri Hayes, has been announced as President
of the Irish Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH Irish Group)
- the organisation which promotes and develops the science
and engineering of groundwater.
Teri, also an Environmental Services Director at WYG Ireland,
said - “I am honoured to be elected as President of the IAH
and hope that I, with the support of our newly elected committee,
can uphold the high standards set by previous committees and
make substantial progress over the course of the next year.
“Our team is made up of individuals from various professional
backgrounds - including academic bodies, state agencies and
private consultancies - and, together, we have an important
role to play in providing information on progress in hydrogeology
and improving recognition of the need to involve hydrogeologists
in resource management, infrastructure development and research
programmes, to ensure adequate protection for Irish aquifers,”
added Teri.
Regular activities of the IAH (Irish Group) include an annual
two day conference, a weekend fieldtrip and a series of monthly
lectures and technical meetings held at the Geological Survey
of Ireland (GSI).
This year’s annual IAH
(Irish Group) conference, entitled - ‘Groundwater in the
Hydrological Cycle - Pressures & Protection’ - marks
the 30th anniversary of the IAH in Ireland and will take place
on the 20 - 21 April in Tullamore.
Experts will provide advice and opinions on subjects such
as flood mitigation, recharge estimation, assessing the impact
of agricultural discharges, groundwater abstractions and the
Environmental Liability Directive.
