€18m for sustainable park

Dublin City Council has announced its plans for the €18m redevelopment of Fr Collins Park near Grange Road and Baldoyle, North Dublin.

The Council held an international design competition in 2003 to seek a park design for a flagship urban park at Father Collins Park, Donaghmede. The winning entry was selected from 43 valid entries and was submitted by Abelleyro & Romero Architects from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The re-designed Father Collins Park is intended to be a park for all - a place of both active and passive recreation, with something to offer all ages within the community. The park will be designed to the highest contemporary standards including landscape, art and architecture as dynamic elements. The 55-acre park will include football pitches, running tracks and outdoor performing arts areas.

Wind turbines will generate electricity for the Park's energy needs, while a sustainable drainage system will also be in place. Reed beds will be used to recycle and clean water for the lake.

Construction is set to begin later this autumn, with completion due in 2009.
