Water could surpass fuel in the price hike race

In the UK, the ongoing fuel crisis could be eclipsed by a water crisis if businesses continue at their current rate of consumption.

Envirowise, the UK government-funded environmental business adviser, believes that drastic action needs to be taken now to avert a water crisis.

Water is becoming an increasingly expensive resource, with the average bill increase set at 18 per cent over five years. Envirowise is encouraging businesses to reduce their water consumption in order to help them future-proof against the operational and bottom-line effect of rising costs.

Envirowise just launched a resource efficiency programme called - the Rippleffect - which could see businesses make annual savings of 3.2bn cubic meters of water, worth about £9.4m per day.

Mary Leonard, director at Envirowise, said - "While cost-savings may be a key driver for water conservation, companies that do so, demonstrate to customers that they are adopting best environmental practice. This, in itself, offers a competitive advantage."

Businesses taking part in the Rippleffect initiative learn more on water efficiency and will be given help to measure the water and cost savings they have made.

The initiative will initially open for a period of six months and companies of all sizes are asked to get in touch before 10 September. Those interested in signing up can register through the Rippleffect site or call the Envirowise Advice Line on 0800 585 794.
