New Regulations for private water supplies, to be administered
by Northern Ireland's Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI), came
into force in January 2010.
The Private Water Supplies Regulations (Northern Ireland)
2009, through a number of new provisions, will ensure increased
protection for the consumers and users of private water supplies.
As well as requiring the monitoring of drinking water quality
standards through a sampling programme, the Regulations also
require a risk assessment to be undertaken at individual private
supplies. The use of risk assessments is in line with current
thinking on protecting drinking water quality through drinking
water safety plans which are currently being implemented within
public drinking water supplies.
This approach is detailed by the World Health Organisation
(WHO) in 'Guidelines
for Drinking-water Quality (3rd Edition)'
The new Regulations will also give the DWI additional powers
in relation to taking action where supplies are not compliant
with quality standards and enable the DWI to serve a notice
to prohibit or restrict the use of a supply where it believes
there is a risk to human health.
