British Energy's fifth Corporate Social Responsibility Report
focuses on the theme of commitment and how this is demonstrated
across its operations.
The Report is based on the Business in the Community and
Global Reporting Initiative guidelines, highlighting performance
in the following key areas - marketplace, workplace, environment
and community. There is a focus on customers, low-carbon electricity,
waste and a long-term commitment to employees and local communities.
The company's performance is measured through an extended
set of indicators that covers its operations. British Energy
has sought independent assurance of its performance monitoring
process and, this year, the materiality assessment has also
been assured.
A FTSE 100 company, British Energy Group plc is the UK's
largest producer of electricity and has the lowest carbon
emissions of the major UK electricity generators. The company
owns and operates eight nuclear power stations, plus a coal-fired
power station - Eggborough.
It has interests in a small number of renewable development
projects and, through its subsidiary company - District Energy
Limited - runs four small modern gas-fired power plants.
