The Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)
in cooperation with the Department of Environment, Heritage
and Local Government (DEHLG) is inviting applications from suitably
qualified experts for nomination as potential contributors to
the fifth assessment reportfrom the Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change (IPCC).
The IPCC
was set up jointly by the World Meteorological Organisation
(WMO)
and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
to provide an authoritative international statement of scientific
understanding of climate change.
The IPCC's periodic assessments of the causes, impacts and
possible response strategies to climate change are the most
comprehensive reports available on the subject - and form
the standard reference for all concerned with climate change
in academia, government and industry, worldwide.
The last IPCC assessment report (AR4) was published in 2007.
Work on the fifth assessment report (AR5) is now commencing.
The EPA is coordinating the submission of Irish applications
interested in contributing to AR5. A number of Irish
academics have been involved as authors in previous IPCC assessment
reports and special reports and the EPA encourages further
engagement in this international process.
The IPCC Assessment Report comprises three working groups
as follows:
- Working Group I - The Physical Science
Basis
- Working Group II - Impacts, Adaptation
and Vulnerability
- Working Group III - Mitigation of Climate
Change
The reports from each of the working groups and a synthesis
report will be published in the 2013 and 2014 period. The
IPCC is currently inviting nominations of experts from national
governments and other organisations for the roles of Coordinating
Lead Authors, Lead Authors and Review Editors in
all working groups.
Lead Authors will be part of international team of
experts that are responsible for the production of designated
sections of the reports on the basis of the current scientific,
technical and socio-economic information.
Coordinating Lead Authors take the overall responsibility
for coordinating major sections of a Report.
Review Editors ensure that all substantive expert
and government review comments are afforded appropriate consideration.
Nominees will be in competition with other internationally
nominated experts for roles in the AR5 writing team. The allocation
of positions will be decided by the IPCC from the nominations
received. The selection of experts will be finalised in May
2010.
Nominated experts for Ireland are expected to have a strong
track record in research and peer review publications in the
area for which they seek nomination.
