From wind comes light

The first combined lamp-post and wind turbine will be installed on the bridge at Castillon-la-Bataille, in Gironde, France, by the end of the month.

According to its designer, Michel Justo - "this is a genuinely new product in the French market."

Q standard metal post is fitted with a low-energy lightbulb and hooked up to a 12-volt, 100-ampere battery, which is continuously charged by a 300-watt wind turbine.

The idea was developed by Aquitaine Aérogénérateurs in early 2006. It is original and cheaper than solar energy - between €1,500 and €1,800 before tax.

The system can be retro-fitted to older lamp-posts, says Justo.

"All you need to do is to attach the turbine to the top of the pole and change a few parts in the lamp."

The device can also be networked - by keeping the electric cabling and installing a 1,000 or 2,000 W turbine upstream from 20 or 30 street lights. Developed for public lighting, it is also suitable for private use.
