European Lamp Companies Federation announces new eco-lighting project

The European Lamp Companies Federation (ELC) has announced a ground-breaking project with EU Ecolabel and Green Public Procurement (GPP) in the criteria revision process.

The criteria revision for the product group 'light sources' consists of establishing the ecological criteria for awarding the EU Ecolabel and GPP (labels, medals, certification, etc.) for light sources.

The first of its kind, this pilot project creates a consortium of industry representatives, NGOs and associations, in close collaboration with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in Ispra and Seville and the European Commission's Directorate General for Environment.

The criteria will be set in a transparent, science-based and workable manner. Industry involvement is necessary in the criteria review process in order to ensure workability and the input of technical expertise.

As a result, user-friendly and harmonised criteria for Ecolabel and GPP will be produced. These criteria will aim at promoting the reduction of environmental damage or risks related to the use of energy. The criteria will also encourage the implementation of best practices (optimal environmental use) and enhance consumers’ environmental awareness.

The criteria will be set at levels that promote the labelling of light sources that are produced with low environmental impact.
