Dublin City wins overall Planning Achievement Award 2010

 

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Emer Costello has accepted the Irish Planning Institute (IPI) overall Planning Achievement  Award 2010.

The award was presented to the City Council for the Phibsborogh/Mountjoy Local Area Plan which was prepared jointly by the City Council and consultants Paul Keogh Architects and John Spain Associates.

The Lord Mayor said - "In being honoured with this award is a fitting recognition of the commitment, enthusiasm and skill - together with the dynamic vision - that they brought to bear in the preparation of this plan for the betterment of the community of Phibsborough."

In accepting the IPI award, the Lord Mayor acknowledged the commitment and professionalism of the City Council’s Planning Department, led by Michael Stubbs, Assistant City Manager and the project team led by John O’Hara with Margaret Coyle and Vivienne Byrne. Also, the Dublin City Planning Officer, Dick Gleeson and Acting Executive Manager, Jim Keogan and the Area Manager, Charlie Lowe, who played a critical role liaising with Councillors in the area and the local community.

The Lord Mayor added - "I welcome the fact that a local monitoring group will be established from within the community to participate in the active process of the implementation of the LAP and we all look forward to seeing its objectives and vision realised for the benefit of the local community and the city as a whole in the coming years."

This is the first statutory Local Area Plan adopted by the City Council and sets a very high standard and has increased the understanding and acceptance of the benefits of local area planning in creating sustainable communities.

The extent of involvement of the local community and local interest groups was particularly important in preparation of the Local Area Plan and resulted in a strong sense of ownership within the community of the Plan.
