Leading property development company, Castlethorn Construction
has received planning approval from South Dublin County Council
for the development of Adamstown Central, the €1.2 billion
town centre at the heart of Adamstown - Ireland’s first 21st
century town.
At 154,000 square metres, Adamstown Central is one of the
largest ever mixed-use planning applications in the history
of the State (Click
Here). It will provide a full range of community,
civic, residential, retail and commercial facilities for the
award winning town’s expected population of 30,000. It will
also lead to the creation of over 2,500 new jobs within the
Town Centre and its immediate environs.
The new town centre will have 60 retail units - including
restaurants, cafés and bars, a 9 screen cinema and 600 apartments.
Once the tendering process is complete, Castlethorn estimates
that up to 1000 jobs will be created during the construction
of Adamstown Central.
Leasing of the retail element of the towncentre development
is already bucking current market trends with anchor retail
and leisure tenants secured over two years in advance of scheduled
opening dates. Details of tenant contracts will be announced
in the coming months. A strong line of national and international
fashion retailers are also currently in negotiation for units
in the scheme, along with a selection of convenience and service
providers.
The new town-centre is a key element of the SDZ (Strategic
Development Zone) plan by South Dublin County Council, which
laid the guidelines for the Adamstown neighbourhood infrastructure.
The town-centre development is on schedule for completion
ahead of the original plans for Adamstown set down in the
planning masterplan.
Amongst the planned town-centre civic facilities are a primary
Healthcare Centre and Inter-Church Place of Worship, a leisure
centre and swimming pool, a Library and Ideas Store, Enterprise
Centre and several civic squares.
“This announcement is an important milestone for Adamstown”
- said Jude Byrne, Senior Project Manager for Castlethorn
Construction. “Our focus is on delivering the long-term vision
for Adamstown as a complete community, not just a town. We
will soon see the 1000th home occupied and have already delivered
key facilities - such as the train station, QBC bus service,
schools and crèche - ahead of schedule. The first local centre
shops will also open this autumn."
The plan for Adamstown Central was created over a three-year
period by a design team of unprecedented scale, led by seven
architectural practices and supported by 55 professional consultancies
- including movement consultants, colourists, lighting designers,
wind consultants, landscape architects and engineers. The
team’s brief was to reconcile the social, environmental and
commercial considerations of 21st century urban living, while
creating a unique place of distinction in the European built
environment.
A scale model of Adamstown Central is amongst the select
displays at this summer’s Royal Academy Exhibition in London.
The development is also one of the projects included in the
'Evolving Norms of Housing' Exhibition at the Royal
Institute of British Architects.
Following recent Planning and Residential Development Awards,
Adamstown received further recognition having been shortlisted
for this year’s prestigious Royal Town Planning Institute
Award - along with leading UK mixed-use retail-led town centre
developments such as Princesshay in Exeter.
