Car makers acknowledged in new awards

Environmentally-friendly car makers are to be acknowledged in a new awards ceremony.

What Car?'s first ever Green Awards is to take place at the British International Motor Show taking place in London from 23 July - 3 August.

Some ten categories and an overall Green Car of the Year will be the basis of nominations for prizes, in response to increasing demand for information on environmentally-friendly cars.

What Car? group editor Steve Fowler explained that the focus of the awards will be on cars' green credentials. However, he emphasised that other factors will be taken into account.

He said - "With increasing environmental concerns among car buyers - not to mention green taxes and spiralling fuel costs - the time is right for a recognised Green Awards."

Renault was recently awarded the Environment Award in the 2008 Fleet World Honours for its range of low emissions models.
