| High-profile business leaders from
household names across Europe have urged ministers to push for
tougher emissions targets.
In a letter to the Financial Times, chairmen and chief
executives from 27 companies wrote in support of British Energy
Minister Chris Huhne's efforts to persuade the EU to cut greenhouse
gas emissions by 30 percent by 2020.
The companies include Vodafone, Asda and Lloyds Banking Group.
The newspaper quoted Truett Tate, group executive director
at Lloyds, as saying the 30 percent goal will enable "European
businesses to seize the commercial opportunities in a way
that will secure competitive advantage and support economic
recovery".
Ministers from Britain, Germany and France last week called
on the EU to raise its emissions targets if it is
to compete with the likes of China, Japan or the United States.
