The Environmental Protection Agency has presented the EPA
Special Award to Cian Rynne for Best Environmental project
at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition on 15th
January 2010.
Cian’s project - 'Aesculus hippocastanum: Terminal bud
locations in the Horse Chestnut and the effects of weather
patterns' - was an entry in the Junior Section of the
Biological & Ecological Sciences category. He is
a student at Pobail Scoil Naomh Coilm Cille, Scholarstown
Rd, Knocklyon, Dublin 16. Cian’s project also clinched a top
category award.
Cian investigated the effects of weather patterns on the
growth of Horse Chestnut trees. He measured the terminal
buds of horse chestnut trees in various locations in Louth,
Dublin and Wicklow and then compared his measurements to weather
data for the last ten years. Cian found that the growth of
the Horse Chestnut trees he measured was linked to rainfall
- the higher the rainfall recorded for a particular year,
the more it had grown.
The EPA has sponsored a Special Award for the best environmental
project each year for the last 11 years at the BT Young Scientist
and Technology Exhibition. It is awarded to the project
that best demonstrate a contribution to the protection and
improvement of the natural environment, for present and future
generations.
