Cork sees new levels of energy efficiency

Wain Morehead Architects Ltd. enjoyed an impressive turn out when clients John & Sally O'Leary generously opened their doors to enable visitors experience the air quality and general comfort levels in a Passive House first hand during the International Passive House Open Days held recently.

The open day was attended by 100 visitors including over 30 architects with TD Simon Coveney on hand to open the project

PH is an onerous energy and comfort standard widely becoming accepted as the energy standard to attain worldwide. Indeed, many regions have actually adopted the standard for energy compliance as it is site and climate specific and over 20 years has been found to be within 10% of predictions.

This is an interesting example of why passive solar architecture can achieve Certification as a Passive House in Ireland. The original design was already tendered as a low energy passive solar project when it was decided to go the certified Passive route during the pilot Certified European Passive House (CEPH) run for the first time in English at Strathclyde University in November 2009.

The project was found to already meet the criteria - aided by site specific climate data it was further tuned with minor tweaks to glass specifications etc.

The design and construction was all local with the majority of the construction team and suppliers from within 10 minutes of the site.
