| Over 50,000 homes across Belfast
will be able to throw their food waste into their brown bin
from now on - instead of relegating it to landfill.
Belfast City Council has sent food caddies and a supply
of biodegradable bags to 55,000 households across the city,
so that their food waste can be recycled.
Councillor Pat McCarthy, chairman of the council’s Health
and Environmental Services Committee, said - “Until now, residents
with a brown bin have only been able to recycle their garden
waste - grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, leaves, etc - but,
thanks to new arrangements on how the council can manage its
waste, people can now also put their food waste into their
brown bins.
“We appreciate that any change has a bedding-in period,
but we would ask residents to assist us in making this new
scheme a success. Our staff are more than happy to help if
anyone is unsure of what they can put in their brown bin.
They can phone 0800 032 8100 or visit our website.”
Belfast City Council has already piloted a successful food
waste collection trial in parts of the city which has helped
boost Belfast’s recycling rate, Mr McCarthy added.
Anyone with a brown bin will receive a kitchen caddy, which
must be lined with a biodegradable bag. You then put your
food waste into the bag, tie it up and put it into your brown
bin.
