The
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine,
Simon Coveney TD, chaired the first meeting
of the government working group to oversee
an application for a licence to the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) to address legacy
waste issues on Haulbowline Island in Cork
Harbour.
A
full investigation into the risk posed by
the Haulbowline dump will not go ahead after
chief medical officer Tony Holohan decided
there were insufficient public health dangers
to warrant it.
People
living near a toxic waste site in Cork harbour
have suffered enough from a disgraceful
issue that must be dealt with sooner rather
than later, Environment Minister Phil Hogan
has said.
The
Government has been given three
months to take action to clean
up the toxic waste site in Haulbowline
or be taken to court by the European
Commission.

Cork county manager Martin Riordan is set
to tell the Office of Public Works (OPW) that
it must speedily complete its report on the
future use of a toxic waste dump in Cork harbour.
A 5,500-signature petition, which is aimed
at forcing the Irish Government to undertake
a clean up operation at a toxic dump on Haulbowline
island in Cork was handed to the European
Parliament last week.
