The LIFE+ ENV project SEDI.PORT.SIL
(LIFE09 ENV/IT/000158), has staged
the first of two interim workshops
as part of its aim to demonstrate
an integrated approach to the sustainable
management of sediment dredged from
ports.
INFOMAR - the INtegrated Mapping
FOr the Sustainable Development of Ireland’s
MArine Resource, is a joint venture
between the Geological Survey of Ireland
and the Marine Institute.
The Taoiseach, Mr. Enda Kenny TD
announced the creation of 92 jobs in
the marine sector while on a visit to
the national research vessel R.V. Celtic
Explorer in Dublin.
Rising sea levels, coastal erosion,
flooding and changes in the frequency
of extreme weather events are the
top public concerns regarding climate
change impacts on the marine environment.
Much
of the sea around the Isle of Wight
and the Isles of Scilly , major
estuaries and islets off the east
coast, as well as reefs, trenches,
sandbars and remote places seldom
seen by humans, are included in
a list of 127 sea areas that have
been proposed as new nature reserves.
