Biowaste Management
Biowaste is defined as 'any waste that is capable of undergoing
anaerobic or aerobic decomposition'. The Landfill Directive
(1999/31/EEC) defines targets to divert biodegradable waste away
from landfill over the next 15 years. These targets will be achieved
through biowaste management, which is the process that treats biodegradable
domestic, agricultural and industrial biological non-hazardous wastes.
A typical biowaste treatment facility consists of aerobic or anaerobic
treatment technology or a combination of these systems.
FTC's knowledge of biowaste management and treatment
derives from the experience gained as one of Ireland's leading
solid municipal waste and sludge treatment consultants.
FTC employs scientists and engineers who are expert in an array
of engineering and environmental disciplines. This breadth of
expertise enables the company to offer its clients a complete
service for the provision of biological waste treatment facilities.

Design & Building Services
Fehily Timoney & Company have been working in Design and Build for
over ten years - both in the role of Clients Representative and
Designer.
In addition, in order to service the Roads Programme, FTC formed
a joint-venture company (Fehily Timoney Gifford) with the UK consultancy
firm - Gifford and Partners - in 1999 and have been working in that
sector since. In 2002, formal agreement was also reached with the
Danish consultancy Rambøll for collaboration on D&B and PPP
type projects, amongst others. Accordingly, a wide range of services
are available to the D&B and PPP sector.
 |
FTC's work experience in the D&B market is unsurpassed.
In particular, the success of FTG at design and build contracts
in the roads sector has resulted in major Irish contractors
retaining FTG as design consultants.
FTG currently acts as designer for a number of large design
and build road projects in Ireland. These include the N25 Youghal
By-Pass, the N8 Cashel By-Pass & N74 Link and the M7 Heath Mayfield
Motorway Project (Monasterevin By-Pass). |
In addition, Rambøll-FTG acted as the Clients Representative
for the Arklow Bank Wind Farm and FTC also acted as the Clients
Representative to the Port of Cork on the recently constructed ore
handling facility.
This blend of experience has fostered a partnering approach within
the company to the execution of these types of projects. Services
provided include -
- Road design
- Bridge design
- Civil and structural engineering.
Environmental Impact Assessment
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the process that predicts
the effects caused by proposed developments on the environment.
An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is the document that presents
the findings of the EIA.
FTC has extensive experience in carrying out environmental assessments
preparing environmental impact statements (EIS). The company employs
professional scientists and engineers who can take a project from
conception to completion. FTC's experience in preparing EISs and
planning submissions covers a wide range of developments such as
-
- Quarrying

Environmental Management Systems
An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a formal, site-specific,
documented system that enables a company to manage environmental
aspects of its operations proactively. The EMS can be certified
to the international ISO 14001 standard or it can be corporate-driven
to meet the requirements of a company's environmental policy and
objectives.
An EMS is required before the issue of an integrated
pollution control licence (IPC) - or a waste licence - by the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The practice of installing
an EMS leads to reduced costs and improvement in company efficiency.
FTC's environmental management philosophy emphasises the balance
between environmental protection and compliance with licence
or corporate conditions, while seeking the most cost-effective
solutions to installing an EMS. |
|
The company's up-to-date knowledge of environmental legislation
provides clients with a large knowledge database on environmental
issues.
Services provided include -
- Provision of a preliminary assessment and report to detail the
most cost-effective solution to installing an EMS
- Register of legislation advice
- Preparation of EMS Manuals - including environmental management
manual, environmental procedures manual, operational procedures
manual
- Provision of pre-certification audit - if required - for ISO
14001
- Feasibility studies.
Geotechnical Engineering
In order to meet the ever-growing demand of the country's growing
infrastructure and to reduce environmental impact, construction
has to be carried out - often in difficult ground conditions. These
projects and developments involve geotechnical engineering to determine
the properties of the soil and rock. Determination of the engineering
properties provides design parameters and highlights any potential
engineering problems - thus minimising future remedial works and
costly delays.
 |
Fehily Timoney & Company is a consultancy in Engineering
and Environmental Sciences.
The company's extensive experience covers a wide range of
the geotechnical issues associated with a broad aspect of
engineering and environmental projects.
This includes - transportation, drainage and waste management.
|
This breath of expertise in geotechnical analysis and interpretation
- combined with the latest knowledge and software developments -
enables FTC to provide cost-effective and innovative ground engineering
design solutions for a wide range of engineering and environmental
projects.
Services provided include -

Waste Management
The Waste Management Act stipulates that the planning of waste management
facilities must include -
- an assessment of the quantity of waste and how it is currently
managed
- a prediction of the effects of future developments
- a definition of the waste policy - and
- a statement on policy implementation.
The provision of infrastructure, management facilities, the education
of the public and the imposition of sanctions are the elements that
combine to achieve the stated policy goals.
|
FTC has been key waste management consultant in Ireland since
1991. Through experience gained from collaboration with leading
overseas consultants in waste management, FTC developed expertise
in strategic planning and the provision of waste management
infrastructure.
