Does size matter? - the impact of size on sustainability

In his latest commentary, Professor Frank Convery, Chairperson of Comhar - the Sustainable Development Council (SDC) - looks at the relationship between size and sustainability.

This relationship covers such topics as -

  • the impact of heavier air passengers on CO2 emissions;
  • the impact of bigger cars on parking space construction and requirements - and
  • the impact of big houses on scarce raw materials.

Professor Convery asks the question - should the smaller continue to pay for the bigger? He suggests that – if you are of the larger version – the next time when you travel by air, you could consider purchasing your more svelt fellow passenger a glass of wine and a meal to acknowledge the fact that their fare is helping to subsidise your excess weight.
