Institute of Technology, Sligo

Institute of Technology, Sligo was the first third level College to offer courses in the environmental area.

The three-year National Diploma in Environmental Science has been running since 1975 and is a three year ab initio course - or a one year add-on post certificate course.

The B.Sc. (Hons) in Environmental Science and Technology was established in 1982 and is a four year ab initio course with the possibility of holders with a relevant diploma joining at year 3 or 4.

It has a five month co-operative education programme (work placement) between the third and fourth year of the course. The emphasis of the course is on waste and resource management and on environmental legislation and management.

IT Sligo also offers a one-year add-on degree in Environmental Chemistry to holders of relevant Diplomas in Applied Science.

With regard to continuing education, a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Protection by distance learning has been running since 1989. It is aimed at science and engineering graduates who have environmental responsibilities, but who lack formal environmental training. It comprises five subjects over two years which may be taken over an extended period to suit the course participant. There is an option to progress to a M.Sc. in Environmental Protection, which is a one year distance learning course available to holders of the Graduate Diploma. The main component is a dissertation, which may be work-based.
